Water or Silicone

Buying online is great if you want a discrete path to lubricant. But it can also seem like a crap shoot, where you are forced to pick your lubricant based purely on advertising pitches. There are so many lubricants out there, and without some means of narrowing your search the process will seem daunting.

The key is to know some lubricant fundamentals, and the most fundamental difference is the difference between water-based and silicone based lubricants.

The advantage of water-based lubricant is that they are not messy; they barely require cleanup (water does evaporate, after all). Silicone is a little bit trickier to get off (think washing olive oil off your hands) and requires soap and water for removal. However, silicone-based lubricant will not evaporate nor will the skin drink it as it will with water, making silicone perfect for when you want to be sure there’s no rush.
